A message from the South Carolina Arts Commission and the South Carolina Arts Alliance:

SC Governor Vetoes funding for SC Arts Commission -- Please Contact Your Legislators NOW!

Hi everyone. We received some terrible, though not unexpected, news yesterday regarding funding for the arts in South Carolina. Governor Mark Sanford vetoed all of the state funds the Arts Commission was allotted by the legislature for grants and programmatic support. If his vetoes are not overridden, then schools, arts organizations, efforts for cultural tourism, and individual artists will lose not only their grant funding, but also all access to the professional support offered by the staff at the Arts Commission, where at least 17 positions would be cut (out of about 24). We, the staff, daily consult with individuals, non-profits, for-profits, and schools to ensure that everyone in the state has access to great art in their communities and classrooms.

PLEASE, please, please contact your local representatives. Tell them that arts funding is critical to the growing communities and raising literate, culturally aware students. Tell them about the difference the arts have made in your neighborhood and your life.
