Arts In Education

For 30 years, the Arts Council of York County has created a multi-tiered program for York County students including artist residencies, student art exhibitions, teacher workshops and educational theater and music performances.

York County Schools: Rock Hill Schools, Fort Mill Schools, Clover School District and York School District One

2010 Banner Project

Started in 2008, the York County Public Art Project, better known as "The Banner Project," was created as a new way to create public art for the community, by the community!  Colorful banners are designed, created and displayed in various parts of the county.  The project has become a major part of the Arts Council's Arts in Education program each February and we are excited to have the biggest participation yet this year!  Participating schools include: Castle Heights Middle, Children’s School at Sylvia Circle, Clover Middle, Crowder’s Creek Elementary, Ebinport Elementary, Hickory Grove/Sharon Elementary, Hunter Street Elementary,  Independence Elementary, India Hook Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, Lesslie Elementary, Mount Holly Elementary, Nation Ford High, Northside Elementary, Northwestern High, Old Pointe Elementary, Rawlinson Road Middle, Rock Hill High, Rosewood Elementary, Springfield Middle, South Pointe High, and Sullivan Middle.

Thank you to everyone for participating in this year's project!

About Kennedy Center Partners in Education

In 2001, the Arts Council and Rock Hill School District Three were selected to become part of the Kennedy Center Partners in Education Program providing teachers resources to use the arts in teaching core subjects.

This national program provides professional development for teachers and equips them to use the arts to teach other subjects. Studies show that using the arts in teaching gives students more opportunities for critical thinking and improves student engagement, attendance and retention.

The purpose of these partnerships is the establishment or expansion of professional development programs in the arts for all teachers. This partnership provides teachers and students with access to quality arts education experiences through touring workshops for teachers, performances, and seminars, It also allows access to Kennedy Center Touring Productions for Young People and Families at a reduced rate and provides on-going communication for the partnership team members with Kennedy Center staff, national workshop leaders, arts education specialists, consultants, and artists.

Artist Residencies

The Arts Council of York County provides $250 to bring an artist into the school and teach for a short period of time.

If you would like to have an artist in residence at your school, contact the Arts Council at 803-328-2787. Local, regional and national visual and performing artists who are currently on the S.C. Approved Artist Roster are eligible to conduct residencies with support of the Arts Council.

Arts In Education Performances

The Arts Council also presents an annual series of educational performances for York County students. Performances tie into South Carolina curriculum standards and present learning in a fun, interactive way.

This Arts in Education series is made possible through support from the Rock Hill School District Three, Winthrop University, the Woman's Club of Rock Hill and generous contributions from our Performing Arts Series patrons.

Past productions include: Junie B. Jones, Freedom Train, Let’s Go Science Show, Amelia Bedelia 4 Mayor, and yearly concerts by the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.
