"Southern Comfort: A Recipe For Murder" is a combination murder mystery and comedic look at the quirky Southern Gothic style of entertainment, particularly the works of Tennessee Williams.
The show kicks off with the murder of Big Daddy Stollitt, a wealthy land owner with questionable scruples. The various suspects include Blanche du Bonkers (fresh from the sanitarium), schemer Stanley Mouthowski, Big Daddy's guilt-ridden son Brick-a-brack, his daughter-in-law with claws Maggie the Kitty, not-so-innocent young widow Doll Baby, flirty caretaker Chancey Raines, and professional escort Paulo Gigalioni. There is also a special appearance by the Angel of Mendacity (a favorite five dollar word). There is sizzling drama, surprises galore, and seven degrees of laughter as the gallery of eccentrics square off in true southern style.
The audience gets in on the act by voting for the killer as more suspects fall victim to the ax (rather gun and mint julep mix). There are also just the right touches of music, dancing, thunder, and sirens to provide a well-balanced theatrical experience.
Playwright and director Greg Paxton has received over fifty productions of his work in regions around the country and won numerous awards, including the Palmetto from Rock Hill Community Theater for the Audience Favorite at the Down Home Fest. He has received grants from the South Carolina Arts Commission and the National Endowment of the Arts. Other murder mysteries produced in Rock Hill have included "Murder Over Shrimp Cocktail," "Speakeasy Of Murder," and "Murder and Mayhem at City Club."
Terry Roueche, local photographer, instructor, award-winning playwright, and the founder and director of Main Street Theater, has produced numerous murder mysteries, including this one.
